PLEASE exercise caution when boiling water and mixing your dye. You will also need to leave enough room to access your furniture piece from all angles and work in a space or room that allows for a fan to be turned on. At one point during this project I had THREE fans going to help speed up the drying process. Bottom line- these are pre-loved pieces and unless the stain is massive, no one is likely to really notice but you. Once that is done, sprinkle the entire piece with a box of baking soda. Make sure to sprinkle baking soda on the underside of the cushions and on the backside of the piece, too.
If you have children, you may need to clean your upholstery more frequently to remove spills, dirt, and stains caused by them. Children tend to be more active and may spend a lot of time on your furniture, which can cause the fabric to wear out quickly.
Ink Stains
Our Sofette and Sofette Sectional are the perfect sofa style for a smaller space! Check out our Brooklyn Sofette below which is the perfect apartment sofa. Shopping can be overwhelming with all the styles and fabric options available these days. You’ll likely spend lots of time scouring your favorite websites for armchairs or researching sofa reviews until you find just the right pieces. I always wanted a white sofa, even with babies and toddlers, despite the extra care I knew it would require. Since no fabric is immune to wear and tear, especially white fabric, I knew prevention was the key to keeping it in great shape.
Handheld vacuums don’t have the same suction power as upright or canister vacuums. If you’re using a handheld vacuum, or your vacuum doesn’t have the suction power that it used to, follow the Pro Tip below. Checking the quality of the sofa before purchasing it is a wise approach.
How To Reupholster A Couch
However, some of the large, firmer ones, are used by family to make a comfortable sitting place on the floor or to prop themselves on the sofa for a good lying down, watching TV position. But I agree that it’s easy to get caught up in making the sofa (or bed) look good, and ending up with stacks of pillows to manage when actually using the furniture. I go through phases, and during the pandemic, thanks to posts such as this, I definitely bought a few too many extra throw pillows.
At first, we tried to find a dog-proof couch on the market. Something that had removable cushions, durable materials, and was safe for the dog in its disassembled state (so no straps they can get their paws caught in). We couldn’t find a single thing that met our needs, so I proposed to my fiancé, Mat, that we design and make a couch that fits those requirements. The good news, at least, is that you couldn’t actually see the pills because of the heather finish of fabric, but it still felt a little less than nice under bare feet and hands. We now can add the ‘tufting’ effect to the back seat cushions. For the back cushions I cut out 2 mirror image pieces, each 5 cm high, 7.5 cm across the top, 6.5 cm across the bottom, and a curved cut-out section starting 2.5 cm from the top.
We switched gears and found this dark brown cappuccino coloured paint. As I mentioned before, we live in an old house with unlevel floors. That, combined with the fact that we don’t have a completely level workspace caused us to use a little more ingenuity. On the corners of the couch we welded a nut inside the metal frame. This way, we could screw a bolt inside and use the bolts to level out the couch.
