By the early 13th century, the Île de la Cité Notre-Dame cathedral faculty had many well-known teachers, and the controversial teachings of a few of these led to the creation of a separate Left-Bank Sainte-Genevieve University that might become the centre of Paris’s scholastic Latin Quarter best represented by the Sorbonne college. The cathedral of Notre-Dame was the first centre of higher-education earlier project based teaching than the creation of the University of Paris, Le Sorbonne, which was based in about 1150.[3] The universitas was chartered by King Philip Augustus in 1200, as a company granting lecturers (and their students) the best to rule themselves independently from crown legislation and taxes. Non-Parisian students and lecturers would stay in hostels, or “faculties”, created for the boursiers coming from afar.
