Continuance in the program and admission to candidacy are based on success in academic courses and on personal, ethical, and performance considerations. Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Counselor Exam (NCE)  and/or the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Exam (NCMHCE). Those who complete the School Counseling track are eligible to apply for licensure with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. As a CACREP-accredited program, the program of study through the Department of Counseling generally meets the licensure requirements for other states. It is the responsibility of the student to check with their state licensing boards to determine what requirements are necessary and to plan for meeting those requirements, if any. The CACREP accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling practitioner-oriented program prepares graduates to work in settings such as community agencies, private practices, hospitals, foster care agencies, and correctional facilities. You’ll be prepared to help clients overcome the obstacles that prevent them from leading healthy and productive lives. Students entering the Counselor Education program in the 2021 academic year will complete a minimum of 60 hours of graduate course work making them eligible for the Master’s of Education (M.Ed.) in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Counselor Education. Students interested in pursuing licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas may apply for an initial LPC license, and take the National Counselor Exam and the Texas Jurisprudence Exam. With a passing score on both exams, an initial license is issued by the State of Texas, after which the applicant must complete 3000 clock-hours of supervised post-graduate counseling internship under the supervision of a board-approved supervisor. The concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is primarily designed for those who wish to pursue employment in a clinical mental health setting and pursue licensure as a professional counselor.
